Nick MacNeil Named Head Coach

The Cape Breton West Islanders of the Nova Scotia Eastlink Major Midget Hockey League are pleased to announce that Nick Mac Neil has accepted the Islanders Head Coaching position effective immediately!

Nick is a native of Creignish, He spent the past season as an Asst. Coach with the Islanders under Telus Cup winning Coach Kyle Mac Donald and Kyle Gillies!   Last summer he was a member of the Hockey Nova Scotia High Performance Staff and currently is an Asst Coach with the Provincial U-14 Team.

Nick has an extensive playing career! He is a former Asst. Capt with the Major Midget Islander’s and during the 05/06 season the Islanders finished the regular season in first place,!  He is also a former draft pick and Captain of the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles where he enjoyed four great seasons. After finishing his junior career Nick joined the UNB Reds where he was instrumental in the Reds winning two CIS National titles. Nick was recognized as one of the top players in the CIS when he was named to Team Canada which won a world university games Gold Medal in Trentino Italy in 2013.

Prior to joining the Islanders as an Asst Coach Nick spent  three seasons playing pro in the ECHL, first with Bakersfield, California and then with Norfolk, Virginia  where he played for former NHL Coach of the Year Robie Ftorek. Nick also attended the St Louis Blues Development Camp on two occasions and played with the Blues rookies in the NHL rookie Tournament in Traverse City, Michigan.

Nick will be an outstanding Head Coach and is anxious to build on the Islanders “Winning Culture” and lead the Team back to the Telus Cup! Everyone involved with the Islanders is anxious to start working with Nick and getting the journey started!
