Two Islanders drafted into Major Junior league

2011-06-13

Two Islanders drafted into Major Junior league by Grant McDaniel VICTORIAVILLE, QUEBEC- The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) held its entry draft last Saturday and two Major Midgets from the Cape Breton West brood made the cut ...

Forward Jesse MacInnis was selected in the ninth round by the Rimouski Oceanic, and goaltender Shawn Jeffrey was selected in the same round by the Saint John Sea Dogs.
Both are 16 years old and have played two seasons with the Islanders.
MacInnis, who was the number two scorer in the Islander lineup this season, comes from Whycocomagh. He had 12 goals and eight assists in 35 regular games this season, and led his team in the playoffs with three goals and an assist in three games.
The season before last was his rookie year on the Major Midget level, where he had seven points in 27 games.
Shawn Jeffrey is from Louisdale and, with 22 starts, was his team’s lead goalie this year. He won only four of those starts, but there’s something misleading about that -- if you don’t know the context. This was a rebuilding year for the Islanders and a year where the team was plagued with injuries so, as a result of that combination, the squad never found its stride.
The Islanders finished in last place in the eight team provincial league with a 5-29 record.
During that stretch, Jeffrey’s goals against average was 4.02.
The Islanders didn’t last further than three games in the post season but, in a manner of speaking, the real action started for Jeffrey once his team was eliminated. The NSMMHL champion Halifax Titans enlisted Jeffrey for action at the Atlantic championships (which the Titans won) and the team kept the Islander goalie on board for its run at the Telus Cup.
Jeffrey managed to backstop Halifax to two ties at the Nationals, winning game MVP honours in one of his outings.
Both Jeffrey and MacInnis were honoured by the league at the NSMMHL banquet last month. MacInnis was presented the John Hanna Memorial award, and Jeffrey was named a first team all star.
Both players have one more year of midget eligibility with the Islanders.
